Out of the Debris

To be one of the unnamed, unmentionables, untouchables, any of these gruesome nicknames always brings a moment of shock. The realization of things in my life that are now a part of my daily grind always sends my thoughts crashing back down to earth. But the truth was in my blood, I am and always will be one of the unnamed, forever cast out, forever feared, and forever sought out to be destroyed or used to wield destruction if anyone were to ever know the truth about me. I don’t know how many of us are left, the feeling of being anything but alone has always haunted me, causing me to be ever cautious of opening myself up to any of my own people much less the normal humans around me. Most humans leave us alone. I even had a friend once who was a human. Then you hear about the stories that filter down the news, especially from the bigger cities, someone out for power or revenge, or maybe just trying to remove anything but humans from the world. I have seen too many times the greed for power, or sometimes that vacuum that it leaves behind, bring one of my kind to their death. But where we come from...even our people share multiple variations and versions of that part of our history. I’m not sure I believe any of it. After all, haven’t humans always ruled our world?
