A long time ago...

Kuvira and Nai have been best friends since birth. But one day their parents never return home. They wait weeks in that crumbled apartment for them to come back, but it never happens. The now orphaned Nai and Kuvira gain the pity and attention of Suyin Beifong. After discovering Kuviras prodigy level bending they are taken to Zaofu. However as they grow up Nai is cast into the shadows, she isn't like the other non-benders there, she doesn't have an academic gift. She's jealous of Kuvira, but shes also secretly in love with her.
