The Rose and the Shield

A poet falls in love with a soldier, while their country is on the brink of war.

(I wrote this in my sophomore year of high school, for a writing contest, and I still think it's pretty good. SPOILERS: I really wish I had given these two a happy ending, but I wrote this specifically to use the rhyme at the end, so.... Maybe I'll write something happier with them in the future.
