The past holds on to people forever, it shapes a person. Grian did his best to act like it wasn't true, his past didn't define him. He hid his secrets but it was a lot for one person to handle. Too much for one man. He was hidden from..them..because of the precious Myceilum that covered the island of the Mooshrums. Nobody else saw it's beauty though.
