Because both didn't want to show how much they were in pain. They try to drown the hurt with a lot of smiles. But there's only so much those facades can cover specially with how much they know each other.

Dani won the lottery of misfortune having her dad abandon her and her mom... Then having her mom abandon her later on, leaving her with two younger siblings. Nonetheless, Dani puts on a brave face and tries to take on the world alone. Maybe she can or maybe she can't. Having a near perfect boyfriend doesn't help when she already feels like she isn't enough now she has to pretend like she is the one fit for him.
