Chapter One

A deadly illness killed millions of people on the island of Verdenlav leaving multiple orphans and widows to fend for themselves. The mayor left with the rest of the richer people. The few people who did not catch the illness were forced to leave the island and leave their families behind. Eleven year old Elizabeth's mother was one of the people forced to leave, leaving Elizabeth to take care of her two siblings. Two years later Elizabeth hears that ships are coming to collect the rest of the people. At first she is relieved, that is until she finds out to get to the ships she must travel through the Forbidden Forest. Nobody who enters that forest comes out uninjured. Sometimes, not even alive.
