97 years ago, the monsters of the Underground arrived on the surface, and the first Bête Noire's reign of terror commenced.
Now, in all parts of the surface, the number of glitches has grown exponentially, extending into seemingly normal occurrences within daily life.
In Jetvale City, a well-furnished metropolis much like the Surface Capital, Tyler Hartford, a high school student and an unskilled wizard, discovers an alarming anomaly in the code of the world, and it's the likes of something neither human nor monster has ever seen before.
