Way had arrived at the bottom. He had not much to do down there except ruin himself and his life. So he took the first chance to get better. Not having ended his life turned out to be a blessing and his previous downfall helped him turn his life around. Being himself used to be a burden and he didn't really know how to live outside of addiction and self destructive behaviour. Having these new friends should help him.
