Every year when a generation of boys and girls turn the age of twenty, they are to go through Conjoinment. The officials choose each person's mate, job and number of kids they are allowed to have, if they are allowed to reproduce. June is about to go through Conjoinment as she discovers the horrific truth of the rules and the real life of the real world she lives in.
