My mother left us in the dead of night and never returned. I was just eight, and had no motherly figure left. My older brother, Ashton, did the best he could the next morning to stop me crying. Then, in the middle of the day, he ran away too. All I had left was my father and he's pretty lousy most of the time.

The only thing I had to remind me of Ashton was a gold baby bracelet, identical to his. My name is engraved on mine, like his name is on his bracelet.
