Running low on resources in their safe haven, The Apex introduces a program that chooses random individuals to Depart against their own will. 17-year-old Rhoawyn Waters hasn't been given many choices in life, and she's determined to decide something for herself when she signs up to Depart-just as her father did. But when she receives the invitation, her life takes an unplanned turn. Excerpt: "You're that guy," she whispers under her breath, as her eureka moment hits her in a hazy clarity. His mouth stops around whatever he is explaining and forms into an easy smirk as he leans forward in his chair. "And which guy is that?" The playful tone rattles her, like the panic she felt when she first saw him, silently watching her fade from consciousness under collapsed cinders. "You were in my house. My house that caught fire!" "Guilty," he smiles, "And stop calling me "you." "What else am I supposed to call you if I wasn't given a name?" "Not true. I distinctly remember mentioning my name before you blacked out." "Gee, how could I ever forget something as insignificant as a name at a time like that?"
