Iris Pratt has struggled with nightmares of a terrifying shadowman who brings out her worst fears since she was a little girl but since her 16th birthday they've gotten much worse. The Shadowman seems to be finding a new way to frighten Iris, when even waking up does not stop her nightmares. Her father and her psychiatrist believe she is experiening hypnopompic hallucinations. Deep down Iris knows what is happening to her is real and not a hallucination. While searching for things in the attic for a family history project at school Iris stumbles upon a copy of her birth certificate and is shocked to see, that the man she has known as her father her whole life is not the man listed as the father on her birth certificate, instead a man named Alistair Ward is shown. When confronting her father Colvin, about the birth certificate he refuses to discuss Alistair Ward with her and forbids her from reaching out. Iris decides to research Alistair Ward on the school computers and learns that he was locked away in a psychiatric hospital...for sleeping problems that are similar to hers but much worse. Against her fathers wishes, Iris visits Alastair in the psychiatric hospital determined to find out the truth about what is happening to her and ends up with much more truth than she wanted.
