Description

So much blood. Surely he was dead. Rachel looked down into the face of the injured, young man, surprised as he opened his eyes. "Are you an angel?" Rachel smiled and smoothed the hair back from his forehead, checking for fever as well as closing his eyes again. "Yes," she whispered back. “Gabriel, bring the light closer." Gabe scooted closer. " He's lost a lot of blood, but I don't think all this is his. What do you need?" "Like to stop the bleeding but we'll just stitch it up and hope for the best. I'll wrap it tight. Hand me my box. And Jesus, get some water." She turned back to the startled eyes of the soldier. "Jesus?! Jesus is here?! Am I dead?" "No! You’re fine. I've sent him for water." She gently pulled the dirty shirt away from the wound. "Here it is! I got it!" The young Mexican boy scrambled into the light, carrying a small bucket around Rachel to the man's head. "Here now. You're alright. I'm Jesus, and we're gonna' fix you up fine! Don't you worry none. Soon as Miss Rachel says you're ready, I'll take ya’ home. I've got a mule!" He smiled encouragingly. The young man stared in disbelief, then slumped back, limp. "Did I kill him?" Jesus squeaked. "Course not. He’s fainted. Maybe I can get it stitched before he wakes again.” She bent her head to work as they looked on..... As the Civil War drags on, Gabriel, Rachel, their brother Michael, and a band of forgotten children make their way across the South in search of a father in the army, unaware that his wife’s death has left the children fearing orphanage life. Their search for one man reveals strengths they never knew they had, and circumstance forges a family stronger than the blood they seek. But will they survive to find him?
