Life in New York City has never been so amazing. Francesca Dahlia Santangelo is a lucky girl, indeed. But as winter progresses into spring, Francie notices she's more and more interested in her nerdy, goofy bespectacled friend, Chester, the statistician for the swim team. A childhood bout with polio has left him on crutches, and no one, not even Chester himself, thinks he stands a chance with the lovely, vivacious Francie.
