Patrick has a problem - 'substance abuse' problem. After getting kicked out by his own father for smoking too much weed, he found a roommate and an apartment after 2 weeks.

River has a problem - 'huge sexual appetite' problem. He thought he had a case of Syphilis but thankfully, it was his problem of dehydration in his body. Now, since his last roommate left because he slept with 'them', he was finding someone to split the rent.
