Before I Wake

"Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord, my soul to keep. May angels watch me through the night and keep me in their blessed sight."

When does a simple little childs prayer turn into a cry for help? Why do we pray this prayer every night before we sleep? Is it out of habit?
