Makes Sense... Sure

A nerd and a delinquent aren't the first people would you would send to save the world.
The government have sent them to fulfill an ineffable prophecy that will either save mankind or destroy it.

Along with other misfits, they travel afar to find and defeat the evils of the world. The Chosen Ones will fight ancient deities, find lost cities, discover lost history.

As they further their journey, their pasts, including the people that they rather to forget, are reintroduced to them. The trauma, regrets, everything will return. Many will try to deter and stop them.

They can definitely do this... right?
