After Kayla's father sacrifices himself to the Shepards in a desperate attempt to hide Kayla's own and her unborn sister's existence, neither her nor her mother think they will ever see him again. He has many charges against him and in their society theft is a crime punishable by death. When they flee to the forest with the little they have, Kayla knows getting caught means death. So decides not to get caught. Simple right? Not really. When Kayla's mother dies in childbirth, she struggles to raise Beth as a mother should. But Beth doesn't know the whole story. She doesn't know why there father did what he did, and that may be a secret Kayla takes to the grave. Beth and Kayla both know the can only trust each other. But will they ever learn to trust others?
