After the Third World War is started, Lucy and her family stave off the Moreau family who escaped to Alberta from Newfoundland when the first riots started. But neither family is neighbourly

One day. Lucy is wandering through her families cornfields near Pembina river when she catches a Moreau boy stealing the falls harvest. In worry for her families survival in the long winter, she shoots the boy in the leg.

The last thing Lucy needs is a war between the two families while war already rages everywhere else in the world. Can an unlikely bond with a Moreau daughter save them or will it only end in flames?
