Jack never talks about the night he disappeared in the woods. It literally changed him. No one would believe him even if he could tell them.
Now Jack spends an eternity being a teenager who comes and goes from town to town on his mission. He can't tell anyone who he rally is or more accurately, what he is.
Rule one about being the Reaper: never get close to anyone. Rule 2: Never let anyone know what you are. Rule 3: Never stay in one place to long Most importantly, rule 4: Never fall in love.
