Dan Howell is one of the most popular boys in school, but when his and his groups' title gets threatened, they come up with a little...game. Recruit as many people into their group so they can't be out numbered by the jocks. Phil Lester, he was just there. Not popular, but not disliked. He had his own little clique of nobodies which gets targeted by the populars. Things become a little more than friendship in some of the pairings, thus the start of The Popularity Project.
