Prologue

Reid shrugged. "I mean, you can't keep looking for the person that you were, because you're different now. You lost someone who was really important in your life. You don't just go back to who you were before that."

I hadn't wanted to start talking about Grandpa, and I felt the familiar tightness in my throat. I was comfortable with who I had been, and moving forward meant figuring out a whole new version of myself, someone who could be OK without him.

"So, who are you in this new version of my life?" I asked quietly.

He looked surprised by my question, and said, "I would say that's up for you to decide, Victoria."
