The first avatar, Wan had a best friend Kila, who has been with him since birth.
She also had the ability to bend the four main elements, and so much more.
Everyone called her the Guardian, or the Hogo-Sha (which ever you prefer).
And since then, every Avatar has had a Guardian, but their identities are hidden, until death.

Aang's Guardian was the most powerful Guardian of all, besides Kila.
Every child in the Southern Air Temple feared her, and her abilities.
The only child that excepted her in the Temple was Aang.
And ontop of that, she was blind.
She used the same thing that Toph used, Seismic Sense.
