Derek thought the hardest part of his life was over. But as if fighting the war wasn't hard enough, he has to come back into the real world and survive, being... normal. Kind of hard to do with a facial disfigurement. After being humiliated by the stares, the murmur and screams Derek locks himself up in his house and vows never to leave again.
