Kratos has been betrayed by Ares, the God of War. After many hardships and much blood, Ares lay dead on the ground, broken and in pieces at the feet of Kratos. After he kills Ares, Kratos is given Godhood and named the new God Of War. In secret, Kratos made his Spartan Army immortal and gave them super strength and agility.
