Alex had the toughest childhood you could imagine. His father left him and his mother. His mother died when he was young. He moved in with his cousin, who abused him then committed suicide.

His tough life has caused him to become selectively mute. He hasn't spoken a word since he was 15.

But, when he meets John, his dorm mate, his outlook on life is turned around.
