AMSTERDAM 1945 Mokum is the age-old nickname for Amsterdam. It is the winter of 1945 in the last dark days of the war in occupied Holland. An Irish GI, GENE CAREY, fated to play the tragic hero, makes a perilous midnight journey across the rooftops of the ice bound city to deliver the new-born baby of a Jewish girl to the sanctuary of a nursing home. A morbid exchange with a stillborn baby saves a life but the return journey with a dead child to his hiding place of the woman, JUDITH SARABANDE, goes horribly wrong. There are complex repercussions. Andrew Carey confronts his dying father ... It is London 1970 and an immature and irresponsible Andrew Carey, is a trouble-shooter for an Irish building contractor. His flatmate and college friend, BILLY, bails him out of Pentonville Jail to get him home to his dying father, Gene. Andrew knows nothing of his true origins and Gene is a now a bitter alcoholic. Andrew pleads with him to disclose something of his mother's life and death and is then shocked by what he is told. Gene dies without further explanation leaving an intriguing legacy in the form of Judith's silver rosary beads.
