Cherie Bonnet is the child of Claude, a sailor turned a gentleman planter and his placée (mixed race mistress) Amélie, the beloved mulatto daughter of a powerful planter and businessman. Though Cherie was illegitimate, her father and grandfather planned carefully for her future. Betrothing her to a son of good family, they had hoped to ensure her a secure future as the wife of a gentleman.
Unfortunately, the sins of the parents are often visited upon their children. Claude Bonnet was married to a vindictive woman, Agathe. She was infuriated her husband had set her aside for the love of his colored mistress, her half-sister. As revenge, Agathe had Cherie kidnapped and sold to a brothel in Florida, far away from her family and all she had ever known.
Diego de Aguilar was a true conquistador. As a powerful duke and a captain in the Spanish Armada, and the former son-in-law of the king, Diego lacked for nothing, except love.
