She has everything perfect: perfect family, perfect looks, perfect life. She lives in West Submarina, the best part of the ocean. Beautiful scenery, best education, and the best mermen in all the sea. Only thing she doesn't have is a dad. He walked out on her family when she was a baby. She never even knew him, or even remembers anything about him. Alice Merryman is the opposite. She is the best swimmer in the state of California, but that doesn't make her popular. In fact, she doesn't have many friends. You could call her an outcast, or you could call her what everyone else does: a loser. Her dad doesn't care about her, and her brother ran away from home about a year ago. And to add to all this, she doesn't even have a mom. Her dad told her she had past away after her first birthday. So now she has no one. No one she can confide in, no girl she can talk to. No one. How are they related? Funny story. Turns out Val's dad that went missing so many years ago is Alice's wretched father, and Alice's late mother is Val's living underwater as a mermaid. Confused? So were they. But, they decided to take one anothers' place in their world, to see what the each missed out on.
