Grim was always a lone wolf, being abandoned by her parents in the woods when she was ten. Seven years later, she stumbles across a farm boy who claims to have a way to beat back the clan of mercenaries, spies, and thieves who have taken over the kingdom while she lived safely in the forest. They soon meet a servant girl working in a tavern who thirsts for adventure, and tags on for the ride, even though she is painfully inexperienced in life. On the road again, they meet a mysteriously sad dark-eyed boy on a grey horse who offers to help them on their way to Rippeta, where the prophecy must be carried out. Grim finds her pack, but can she keep them?
