Solitary confinement is bad on a mentally ill person like Callaghan, it causes him to have hallucinations, panic attacks, and difficulties with thinking, concentration, and memory. i think that every day in that cell, he's hallucinating that he's turning into a monster. (Since he now sees himself as a monster, anyway, after what he's become.)
