Naruto never really got the acknowledgement from Iruka, but passed the exam. Even years later, he never really got any acknowledgement from anyone. Sure he was on a team and everyone went to him, but they take his kindness and willingness to help for granted. The only one that cares is Jiraiya, but that's not enough...it doesn't beat the fact everyone wants him dead. Kakashi just....he doesn't know how Kakashi feels.
