The Meanest Man in Pickens County

This short story is based on a young teacher's encounter with a bootlegger in Pickens County, South Carolina in the 1970's. In a clash of cultures, "the meanest man," Carl, and his friend, Stupid Stewart, taught him a few lessons about life. The story won a Hackney Literary Award in 2013.
