Westwood High student Jarod Kim is a selective mute. But, to the people around him, he appears to be unable to speak. He doesn't respond to his name being called. He doesn't talk when he is asked to. So they all assume that he cannot speak, because why would you choose not to speak? Along comes Miss Violet Erinsol, the smart, popular girl. She is assigned to be Jarod's tutor during junior year and immediately felt as though there was more to him than he was letting on. She wanted to know what exactly was going on inside his head.
