Description

Pronounced KAHN-taa, this method of quilting originates from the Eastern states of India, West Bengal. Traditionally in this region, women hand-stitch layers of vintage recycled saris to give it a new look and transform these into quilts. Over it straight running stitching is done which is known as kantha stitching. As you can imagine, Kantha throws or quilts are made of an array of colous and patterns with noticeable stitching as part of the design. Each piece of these kantha quilts is completely unique - you really can't find two identical! As these are made from old recycled sari and each sari is of different color, pattern and design. Each quilt or blanket is made of layers of thin saris, so these provide warmth. These kantha quilts has multi-usage, these can be used as a bed cover as well as a throw over a sofa or chair, cushion covers, curtain, mobile holder and has other many more usage. The layering depends on the requirement. Sometimes, it's just 2 layered and can goes upto 8-9 layers. The colours and patterns are impulsive different on each kantha, but you'll find that these always complement each other. They bring new colous and a bit of indian history and culture into the home - who wouldn't love these alluring and glistening kantha blankets.
