Mari means "true reason", "perfection". It is a variant of the Japanese name Mariko, or even the diminutive to Mary, "sovereign lady", "the pure".
Mari was born in earth, she is Tony Stark's daughter, an ordinary 17 year-old girl.
Loki is a god, the god of mischief, brother of Thor and Odinson. They have nothing in common, but as they say, opposites attract. She is his ying and he is her yang. We'll see how fear becomes love!
