Before age 10, Auggie and Prim Pullman never attended a mainstream school. They never sat in a classroom smelling of chalk and stale schoolbooks, listening to children's chatter echoing off the walks.

They never walked into a school cafeteria and had other students stare as they opened their lunch -- that is, until fifth grade.
