Chapter I

Anna Schwarz and her friends prefer to remember the convenient aspects of the nation's history, joining their ancestors in the seemingly never-ending struggle to legitimatise their connection to the land.

For Ruth Harris, selective memories are yet another means of "rubbing it in her face" that her people live on the invisible and visible outskirts of society.

Meanwhile, Anna tells herself that this is the land of the fair-go. She cannot, she argues, be held responsible for her ancestors' actions. Ruth only says that if one is willing to enjoy the fruits of injustice, one must be willing to bear responsibility for it.

But, what is responsibility? How far can it be taken? And can the nation ever come to terms with its past?
