Kaspar Zavodny, a former apprentice of a Prussian Alchemist, has been locked in a tower laboratory, adjacent to the Royal Castle, not to be released until the Bohemian King is satisfied that the ultimate experiment is not only successfully performed, but can be repeated as many times as desired. However, with his supplies of equipment and materials diminishing as a result of many failures and the possibility of execution as a result, Zavodny plans his escape. As ever, there is a price to be paid. He finds refuge in a synagogue in the old town district where records of an ancient Hindu method of transmutation are believed to exist, but now he will be working for new masters, whose demands will require him to relinquish even more than just his life.
