Prologue

I always hated mysteries, now more than ever.

"You were the last person to see him and you can't tell me anything?" Detective Mark asked. His brows were raised and lips pursed, an obvious sign of his annoyance and disbelief.

"Alec was my best friend, but he had secrets." I snapped. "Stuff he wouldn't share with me. So, I know nothing and can't tell you anything."

Detective Mark stared at me. "Your the one person in this damn town to even get close to this kid and your telling me he didn't trust you with his secrets?" Cue the pursed lips.

I don't know why but his question hit a nerve and all my anger and grief rose to the surface. "It wasn't a matter of trust!"

"Then what?" Detective Mark retorted, eyes blazing. I could understand his frustration. It's been a week and the only lead this man has is me and here I am providing yet another dead end but his rush to close the case was forcing him to miss the obvious.

"Obviously he was in too deep Detective!" I yelled. "When your in trouble with bad people, would you involve the one person you care about most?! Risk their lives?! I was not the person to go to! I wouldn't have helped!"

Detective Mark sighed, running a hand down his tired face. If he wasn't being so dissmissive with solving Alec's case I probably would've felt bad for the guy. Since the first time I talked to him a week ago, a day after the accident his hair was a mess, not the neat pile it once was and under his eyes laid dark circles. I swear his bags had bags of their own.

This case was keeping him up at night. The one thing we had in common.

"I'm sorry." he mumbles, blinking sleep from his pale blue eyes. "I just want to know what happened. We have no body, no witnesses and the one suspect we did have has a air tight alibi."

Yeah, fate wasn't really on our side either. I just hoped that sooner or later we would find something, anything to find out who did this.

But you know what they say about hope, it breeds eternal misery.
