Haf is broken - she is a Tyreen with no wolf. Three turns ago, she returned from the Drielm - the Tyreen coming of age ceremony - with only one form. Torn apart with confusion and frustration, Haf is trying to accept herself as only half a Tyreen when her clan kicks her out. Forced out onto her own, Haf must face the dead of winter and an island brewing with war between the wolf clans. With the help of a first blood wolf by the name of Nonn, Haf is determined to find the shaman Saeth, who she believes is the only one who can help her and the fate of the Tyreen.
