The Blackwoods are descendants of The Lockwoods, they share a supernatural gene, it's similar but not the same. It's not triggered when you killed an innocent person, it's triggered when you hit puberty. The Blackwoods are werecats.

Aiden Blackwood is a were-panther who lost his Mom one year ago and he is the last of his kind. Fortunately for him his Uncle Richard Lockwood took him in and he's lived with him and his Cousin Tyler Lockwood in Mystic Falls for a while now.
