Kayla, a girl with a unique pendant that she carries almost everywhere, has experienced a summer that's different than all the rest. After experiencing the darker side of the woodlands that she temporarily called her own, she forms a connection with a boy named Auryn, who resides in the woodlands. Kayla thinks their friendship will be long distance for a while, until a family situation changes that thought. As the two become more familiar with each other, they soon realize that many lives are about to change more than ever, including their own lives.
