Fifteen-year-old Kate Bell has always had a bit of an unconventional life. Between her passive father, unstable mother, no real friends to speak of, and a non existent social life, Kate devotes all her time to reading, when she's not going on some new adventure with her older brother, Robert. When the country splits in two with the outbreak of the American Civil War, Kate is shocked and devastated when Robert comes home one day with an announcement: he's volunteered to fight with the Rebels. With Robert gone, Kate watches as her life spirals out of control. At the bottom of that downward spiral is the Atlanta Mental Hospital. She's unjustly locked away in the asylum and forced to endure a miserable lifestyle and odd treatments for her imaginary diseases. The worst part is that she can't get out unless someone from her family signs the release forms, but the only family member who is able to do that is the one who put her in the institution to begin with. Can Kate find a way out of the asylum before she loses her mind, or will she be trapped forever?
