Sixteen-year-old Emmanuel Uche is living the perfect double life: in his poor neighborhood he's seen as the bookish, straight-A student who's bound to make it out of the hood; and to the internet he is Blaq Pharoah, an anonymous podcast personality who is never afraid to tell it like it is. When it comes to balancing these two lives, Emmanuel maintains a flawless equilibrium---that is, until he witnesses a stranger named Destiny nearly get shot by a police officer at a Black Lives Matter march.

When confronted with the task of going public with Destiny to tell her story, Emmanuel is caught between the desire to speak out against injustice and the fear of making himself and his family a target. All the while, Blaq Pharaoh's popularity is skyrocketing, and everyone is beginning to ask: who is the person behind the microphone?

With Destiny constantly on his radar and the internet growing restless, Emmanuel feels paralyzed by the pressure to speak up. He begins to realize the true cost of staying silent, and must decide whether to listen to the local police department, the media, and his school administrators when they tell him to keep quiet---or if it's his own voice that matters most.
