Rebecca Lexington lives in a world where .1% of the population is born different. They have powers that cannot be explained by the modern science of the time, and are seen by most as less than human. Identified by a mandatory test at the age of fifteen, these people are referred to as simply the Defectives, and once identified, they are sent to The Institution. No one really knows what goes on there. But Rebecca is about to find out, because she knows that there are things she can do that no one else can. And her testing is fast approaching. The government has always left a bad taste in Alessandra's Greene's mouth. As a student at the London School for Defective Warfare, more commonly known as The School, she holds an elite status within her city. Few students are admitted into The School, and even fewer show as much promise as she does... or did. Up until a few years ago, she was one of The School's best and brightest. But, when the voices that have been following Alessandra since birth become louder, her once organized life begins to spiral out of control, raising questions about her own status in relation to the Defectives.
