Valentina Rossi - desperate, afraid, praying for the success of kindness - invites the local no-hoper Alex Kritcher to stay the night at her place, and immediately regrets it. They haven't spoken in years, her parents are nearly as bad as his, and she's not even sure she meant to say it.
But perhaps it's those exact reasons that made it so crucial for her to offer her hand to him: accidents are the things that make the world go round.
