They are hunted by humans. Thought of as freaks of nature, with bestial features and supernatural abilities. Discriminated. That's why there are places, secluded and secure, for them. Often unfittingly called Shiftlings by the humans, they thrive in these safe havens, educating themselves, socializing, sentient like humans. Many, however, don't live in these settlements, rather wanting to live somewhere else and travel.
