'I was always destined to be at home in this restless place. It fits my personality, with its dark moodiness and mystery and matches my rage with the raging and often unforgiving river flowing right past it. I was content with the long low moans in the dark, carried by drafty winds that chilled us to our bones, our only hope of warmth from the heat that burned inside us, made up equally of fears and desires. It was in turn the desire that scared me most of all I think and if it wasn't it should have been. It was certainly more dangerous than any of the rest. Even more so than the secrets hidden in the depths of this sprawling and fantastical mansion by the river, much more so than the rumors of the monster living within it, I was afraid of what I knew I felt for her and terrified of what I knew she felt for me. I couldn't let it happen again, you see. I didn't want to lose her at all but it was better - better by far - than losing her to this house or to the unforgiving, unrelenting waters of the Hudson.'
