Levi is deaf, but he doesn't mind. He views the world differently as does he sound. The fact that he VIEWS sound should say that enough. He sees laughter in the way someone's nose scrunches up and sees sarcasm in the roll of the eyes.

Eren Yeager has synesthesia so he associates things that other people don't. He connects months with shapes, numbers with letters, and sound with colors. He sees laughter in shades of pink and sneezes in splashes of blue.

Then the two meet.
